[6] “For unto us a Child is born,
Unto us a Son is given;
And the government will be upon His shoulder.
And His name will be called
Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God,
Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.” – Isaiah 9:6 (NKJV)
25th December is one of the most memorable days in the Christian calendar each year. It is a day the whole world hears that Jesus came into the world, although it isn’t the exact day Jesus was born from ancient times, research says. But suppose you’ve forgotten your birthday and decided to take one day within the year to celebrate your birthday, won’t it be good? Christmas is good and should be celebrated more intentionally on Jesus. Today, let’s take a verse from Isaiah 9:6 for today’s devotional.
The first part of the scripture says, “For unto us a Child is born, unto us a Son is given …”. My emphasis in this part of the scripture for today’s devotional is three words: “us,” “Son”, and “given.” Jesus was born for us, and Jesus, being a Son of God, was also given unto us. Think about this. Every married couple glorifies God when a child is born unto them. They become joyous not because of what the world will benefit from that child but because that child becomes a blessing to them. For Jesus, He was born for us, with Mary as His chief steward.
But speaking more emphatically on the word “Son,” the Bible says, “… unto us a Son is given.” Yes, Isaiah 9:7 elaborates on the functionalities of Jesus as the Son. But the word “give” there means that Jesus is God’s gift to us. 1 Corinthians 9:15 says He is the unspeakable gift. I want you to meditate on this… that Jesus is not just your Saviour or Lord but a gift unto you.
What do you do when someone gives you a gift? You unwrap it and utilise what’s in it for your benefit and those connected to you. Right? Jesus, being a gift to you, is far bigger than you to enjoy Him alone. So, pursue a deeper intimacy with Him, but also share the gospel with others.
You are a blessing.
Prayer:
Father, help me to honour Jesus more than ever on this Christmas day. May He be the centre of this festive season everywhere. Amen!
