[17] “For the kingdom of God is not meat and drink; but righteousness, and peace, and joy in the Holy Ghost.” – Romans 14:17 (KJV)
God’s kingdom is not physically visible in this present age, although it’ll be when Christ comes. But believers in Christ are in this kingdom and such, each one who is conscious of Christ every day actually lives experiencing what’s in the kingdom in his life. There are several scriptures that give out the characteristics of God’s kingdom. But in Romans 14:17, Paul wrote three of them together, which I want to focus on in this devotional. He says God’s kingdom is not meat and drink. But what? Righteousness, and peace, and joy in the Holy Ghost. Wow!
For the scripture to say God’s kingdom is righteousness, then righteousness has a core standing in how things are done in it. In Psalm 89:14, the Psalmist said clearly that righteousness and justice are the foundation of God’s throne. So yes, you can’t go to God if you’re not righteous. That is why He makes you His righteousness in Christ when you become born again (see 1 Corinthians 5:21, Romans 10:10) so that you can come to Him.
Also, for peace to be a part of God’s kingdom, then it means God prioritises peace so much and He wants all of His children, who are in the kingdom, to enjoy His peace every day. That is why Jesus gave us His peace before He left the Earth (see John 14:27). If you don’t have peace in your spirit as a child of God, you must pray!
Lastly, the kingdom of God is about joy in the Holy Ghost. Joy is so important in the life of every believer. In fact, without joy, life becomes boring, unenjoyable and burdensome. Let God be your source of joy, not whatever is happening in your life. You’ll enjoy peace even in the midst of storms.
You’re a blessing.
Prayer:
Father, thank You for filling Your kingdom with righteousness, peace and joy in the Spirit. I choose to live by Your dictates each day. In Jesus’ name. Amen!
