Pastor Rick Warren once said, “Humility is not about thinking less of yourself, but thinking of yourself less.” Since then, many authors have used his quote to explain several things about humility. I second Pastor Rick’s definition because it is scriptural. Today, I want to talk about one of the scriptures that explains humility.
In Romans 12:3, Paul, inspired by the Holy Spirit, wrote that as a believer in Christ, you should not think of yourself more highly than you ought to but rather think of yourself with sober judgment. My emphasis is on the word “sober.” To be sober means to be moderate, solemn, or of sound mind. That composure in the mindset prevents you from talking pridefully or thinking you are more important than others in this life, even if your status in society is somehow elevated.
The Bible says in Acts 10:34 that God is not a respecter of persons. Many people may give you all forms of accolades and things to make you feel bossy. But before God, there is neither male nor female, bond or free, boss or employee, even pastor or congregant. All are one in Christ Jesus (see Galatians 3:28). Don’t think that you are to talk arrogantly just because you may be ahead of others in age, area of work or financial status. No! Humility is key. In fact, it’s necessary if you want God to lift you to higher levels in Christ. So think of yourself with sober judgment!
