The Unbelieving Believer

“ ‘If you can’?” said Jesus. “Everything is possible for one who believes.” Immediately the boy’s father exclaimed, “I do believe; help me overcome my unbelief!” — Mark 9:23 - 24 NIV

One time, a man brought his epileptic boy unto Jesus to have him healed. However, Jesus wasn’t around. So the disciples had to do it. But these disciples couldn’t heal the boy, not because they didn’t have faith, but because their spiritual capacity for such healing wasn’t enough. So Jesus rebuked the disciples first after hearing the complaints from the man.

When Jesus was speaking to the sick boy’s father, the man said, “… I do believe; help me overcome my unbelief” (Mark 9:24). The man believed in Jesus but didn’t believe the Father could heal his son. What a tragedy! So the healing which happened when Jesus cast out the demon was out of Jesus’ faith, not the man’s.

The impact of God upon a person’s life is only limited by his faith and knowledge, not God’s.

There are unbelieving believers around us in the body of Christ. They are saved but limited in their understanding of what God can do in their lives. That is why the impact of God upon a person’s life is only limited by his faith and knowledge, not God’s.

Run checks on your life. See if you are an unbelieving believer. In which area of your life have you limited God to do wondrous things? Is it the search for a godly husband or wife, a child, a job or admission? There’s nothing too hard for God. Don’t box Him with your limited mindset.

You’re a blessing.

Prayer

Father, I pray, in the name of Jesus, that I believe You can do everything I ask, think or imagine. Therefore, I will not worry again about how You will fulfil my genuine heart desires because of my delight in Your Word. Amen!
