[40] “The student is not above the teacher, but everyone who is fully trained will be like their teacher.” – Luke 6:40 (NIV)
Whenever I read this scripture, I remember something funny that happened to me when I was in primary three (third grade). At that time, I was barely eight years old. I had a maths question my class teacher asked in class correct, but the teacher calculated it wrongly. For that sake, I thought I was wiser than the teacher. Guess what? The teacher made me kneel as punishment for the whole day. I still remember it today because it helped me to remain humble even if I am more knowledgeable in areas than my seniors in any field of life.
In Psalm 119:99 (NKJV), David said,
“I have more understanding than all my teachers, For Your testimonies are my meditation.”
Really! Read that again. David meditated in the Word, so much so that he had more insight into it than even the priests who served in the temple, who were responsible for teaching the Israelites God’s laws, including the king. But David never decided to disregard the priests in the land. He still remained dear to God’s heart as a king. What can we learn from this?
Sometimes, you may have more time to study the very things your spiritual head is teaching the entire congregation every day. And so because of that, you can grow to be more knowledgeable than your teacher, which is not wrong, suppose that happens. But follow Jesus’ principle – the student is not above the teacher. The student can be more knowledgeable than the teacher but not as experienced as him.
Respect your leaders, especially your spiritual leaders, in God’s house. Honour people and live peaceably with all men. But continue to remain connected and submissive to the one who contributed to your rising.
You’re a blessing.
Prayer:
Father, thank You for Your love and affection. Help me to remain humble to my teachers no matter how great You increase me in divine wisdom. In Jesus’ name. Amen!
