“But he who looks into the perfect law of liberty and continues in it, and is not a forgetful hearer but a doer of the work, this one will be blessed in what he does.” — James 1:25 NKJV
What is the perfect law of liberty in Christ? Is it the knowledge of grace that makes you do whatever you want? Or is it a rule in God’s kingdom that traps you in doing what God tells you to do? No! It’s simple.
The perfect law of liberty is the Spirit of life. Romans 8:2 says,
For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has made me free from the law of sin and death.
Romans 8:2 NKJV
The Spirit of life is in Christ Jesus. It’s Jesus that sets people free (John 8:36). And since Jesus is the Word of God, whoever comes to Him and gets saved becomes a subscriber to His content.
Now, God’s Word is your life manual. The Bible says it’s useful for teaching, correction, rebuking, and instruction in righteousness (2 Timothy 3:16). So in James 1:22, the Word tells us that we should be doers of the Word and not hearers only.
By becoming a consistent doer of God’s Word, you also become an onlooker of the perfect law of liberty. What that means is that your life starts to get transformed to become more Christlike. Why? Because the cleansing power of the Word gradually flushes out destructive content in you and replaces it with sound doctrine. And since you live out what’s in you, you’ll begin to manifest the ways of Jesus physically.
I want to tell you that doing God’s Word is work. You’ve got to be intentional about working the Word you receive, both from the Lord and from the ministrations of the servants of God. Don’t just listen. Look into it, meditate upon it. Let the Holy Spirit broaden your spiritual understanding of the mysteries of God, and your life won’t be the same.
You’re a blessing.
Prayer
Father, I pray that you’ll open up the dimension of the Holy Spirit responsible for the spiritual understanding of Your Word. Help me to continue looking into the perfect law of liberty so that every aspect of my life will revere Christ in this broken world. In the name of Jesus. Amen!
