The Lord Is My Shepherd

“The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.” — Psalms 23:1 NKJV

David is one of the great people whose closeness to God got recognised by God Himself. He was a shepherd of his father’s flock before he got anointed by the prophet Samuel to become king of Israel.

When he said, “The Lord is my shepherd,” in Psalm 23:1, it wasn’t because he wanted something extraordinary in his life. It was because he had learned how to trust God when he was alone in the wilderness with the sheep.

In those days, a shepherd could be left alone with the sheep in the bush for months without coming home. If the family of the shepherds would come around, then they just came to deliver food and go. That’s why Jacob sent Joseph to deliver food to his brothers in Genesis 39, who then captured him and later sold him to the Ishmaelites.

God is your source, not your job, parents, guardians or investments.

Until you’ve gone through a season of pain, scarcity and temporary abandonment by people, you’ll not truly understand what it means to declare, “The Lord is my shepherd.” Why? Because others will provide for you, and you’ll not have any reason to come before God for your needs.

God is your source, not your job, parents, guardians or investments. He will take care of you. Hence, be anchored in His promises. He’ll never break His faithful character no matter how people are unfaithful to you. Trust in Him.

You’re a blessing.

Prayer

Father, help me to trust in You in seasons of abandonment, pain, rejection and scarcity. Help me to lay hold on Your promises when everything around me is in disorder. In the name of Jesus, I pray. Amen.
