The Good Shepherd Lays Down His Life for the Sheep

[11] “I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.” – John 10:11 (NIV)

During Jesus’ time on Earth, shepherding was something familiar to see. Many people were rich in livestock, so they usually appointed people, sometimes their sons, to be their shepherds. David practised it. King Saul in the Old Testament was a shepherd before he was anointed by the prophet Samuel to become a king. Even Abraham had herdsmen take care of his livestock. So, as you can see, Jesus using the term “good shepherd” in relation to His Lordship and guidance in our lives was quite understandable to the Jews. Maybe, in this modern generation, where animal farmers aren’t plenty to behold due to lots of industrialisation, it might be difficult for people to understand what Jesus meant when He said the good shepherd lays down His life for the sheep.

Look at something. Imagine seeing a sheep in the middle of the road with a car approaching. Indeed, that sheep will be knocked down by the car, and it will die. Right? But just before death, the one in charge of that sheep gets on the road to save the sheep, but upon doing that, rather dies, leaving the sheep alive. Picture this in your mind. What will you say about the person? The person is loving. Right?

Jesus laid down His life for you. That is why He is the good shepherd of your life. If He gave His life for you so that God would not judge you based on your sins, how much more would He give you the things you ask Him for by faith in prayer? You don’t need to doubt His provision in your life. He is always with you, but you must always be conscious of His presence in your life.

You are a blessing.

Prayer:

Father, thank You for taking care of me. Help me love You deeply and trust that You will keep providing for me every day. In Jesus’ name. Amen!
