“Yet it shall not be so among you; but whoever desires to become great among you, let him be your servant.” — Matthew 20:26 NKJV
One time, a mother of two of Jesus’ disciples approached Him and asked for His two sons to sit at both hands in His kingdom. Jesus was patient. He knew the woman was totally ignorant of what she was asking for. So He told her it’s not His decision to decide who sits at the right or left but the Father’s. However, He knew the woman was seeking greatness for her sons among the twelve disciples.
In order to discourage favouritism and division amongst His disciples, He told them that the cost of greatness in Christ is servanthood, not titles or positions of influence.
If you want to be first, you must be the last. If you want to become great amongst people, you must serve everyone on that team. That is the truth. Anyone who is rising or is at the top in Christianity or ministry is a servant. Until they tell you the kind of sacrifices they make, and the unseen labour they get involved in to make everything people see run smoothly, you’ll think they are just lucky people.
People of God, don’t be deceived. Ministry isn’t a joke. It’s not for lazy people but the hardworking. You can be great, but never overnight. You must pay the price of sacrificial servanthood, whether people recognise your works or not. It’s good to desire to get to the top, but let no man deceive you that the path to that realm of life is easy. Shalom, peace and life to you.
You’re a blessing.
Prayer
In the name of Jesus, God, I pray that you’ll help me to make the necessary sacrifices to pay the price of servanthood, as I deem to become great for the benefit of many for Christ’s sake. Amen.
