[23] “Be sure you know the condition of your flocks, give careful attention to your herds; [24] for riches do not endure forever, and a crown is not secure for all generations.” – Proverbs 27:23-24 (NIV)
Back in Solomon’s days, wealthy people were not those who had many earthly possessions like today. They were people who had large flocks of sheep, farmlands and human labour as properties (that is why some people were slaves in homes back then). And because of that, many of these rich people disrespected people. They based their source of happiness and joy on what they had instead of God, which was tragic.
In Proverbs 27:23-24, the Preacher warns such rich people to know the conditions of their flocks and also give careful attention to their herds. Why? Because riches do not endure forever, and a crown is not secure for all generations. Imagine that!
There’s no guarantee that your wealth will last forever. But even that, pay attention to what you have. So, I want to ask you a question. Do you steward your possessions well? What God has given you, do you handle it with care? Many people have spoilt devices that they could have been more careful in handling them. And as a result of that, they keep spending more money to get new ones.
There are devourers in this world. If you don’t follow God’s principles, even as a wealthy person, these devourers can rip you off your possessions. Pray for divine guidance in who you engage with whenever it comes to monetary things.
You’re a blessing.
Prayer:
Father, help me to steward the possessions You’ve blessed me with well, lest I lose them for shabby ways of handling them. In the name of Jesus. Amen!
