Sit at the Feet of Jesus

[39] “And she had a sister called Mary, who also sat at Jesus’ feet and heard His word. [40] But Martha was distracted with much serving, and she approached Him and said, “Lord, do You not care that my sister has left me to serve alone? Therefore tell her to help me.” – Luke 10:39-40 (NKJV)

Did you know that serving God can be so involving that you may get into a season of not enjoying the Lord of the work? It happened to Martha in the Bible. When Jesus came to their house for a visit, they were glad to receive Him. Now Martha, out of customary rights, gave herself work to serve Jesus (and His disciples, supposed He went there), which was not a wrong action. Mary, her sister, chose to sit at the feet of Jesus to hear Him ministering.

After a while, the serving sister complained to Jesus that the one who sat at His feet wasn’t helping her to serve. Now, there is no scripture that says Jesus went into that house alone. And because Martha needed help with the serving, I believe Jesus went there with His disciples. But what was Jesus’ reply to her? He said,

“… Martha, Martha, you are worried and troubled about many things. [42] But one thing is needed, and Mary has chosen that good part, which will not be taken away from her.”

Luke 10:41-42 (NKJV)

From this, Jesus doesn’t want us to be so concerned with serving Him that we don’t enjoy Him. Mmmm. That’s a very powerful thing to take note of, especially as a minister of the gospel. I am a leader in our ministry, so I know how it feels like to oversee God’s work daily, day and night. Sometimes, it can be very involving that without a structured way of spending time with Jesus, it’ll be difficult to even pray consistently. Dear leader, don’t fall for this.

Learn to enjoy Jesus no matter how busy you are. Create a strong boundary between time for work and time for Jesus alone while leaving everything aside. That will help you enjoy the Lord very well as you make an impact in His name.

You’re a blessing.

Prayer:

Father, thank You for Your love and provision of comfort. Help me to enjoy You, no matter how busy I am, as I serve in the ministry. In Jesus’ name. Amen!
