[8] “he who exhorts, in exhortation; he who gives, with liberality; he who leads, with diligence; he who shows mercy, with cheerfulness.” – Romans 12:8 (NKJV)
In James 2:13, the Bible tells us that mercy triumphs over judgment. That means a person may be at fault. But when the offended decides to show mercy to him, he won’t be punished the way he deserves. Usually, judges have the exclusive power to do that. But the Bible explains in 1 Corinthians 6:5 that as believers, we can also serve as judges of ourselves and others when it comes to disputes against fellow believers.
In today’s devotional, I want to speak briefly about the spiritual gift called mercy. According to Romans 12:8, some people have that divine gift to show mercy to people with cheerfulness in their hearts, Wow! That’s interesting. Usually, when it comes to showing mercy to someone, it’s about making the person go scot-free for his wrong actions. People who do that usually do it out of sympathy, not cheerfulness. But the Bible says you can have that gift.
As a person in high authority in society, there will be times when people will flout laws and rules, especially in organisational workflow. They should be punished for such deeds. But you cannot always do that if you want to show love for them. Sometimes, you must be merciful. Remember that you are a human being. As such, you will need others in your walk of faith in this life. Who you despise today can be the person you may depend on in the future for help. If Joseph hadn’t shown mercy to his brothers in Egypt, they would have perished. Forgive people!
You’re a blessing.
Prayer:
Lord, help me never boast about myself because of where You have placed me. May I show mercy unto people with cheerfulness in my heart upon doing so. In Jesus’ name. Amen!
