by[5] “For when we were in the realm of the flesh, the sinful passions aroused by the law were at work in us, so that we bore fruit for death. [6] But now, by dying to what once bound us, we have been released from the law so that we serve in the new way of the Spirit, and not in the old way of the written code.” – Romans 7:5-6 (NIV)
Romans 7:5-6 is not for everyone; it’s for believers in Christ, and I want you to understand that. We were once in the realm of the flesh when we weren’t born again, and that state of life is the same for every unbeliever today in this world. But if you have been saved by Christ Jesus, the law of sin doesn’t work in you anymore. The law of the Spirit is the new spiritual law at work in you.
With that law comes a new way of service in Christ — the way of the Spirit and not the written code. Paul used the phrase “written code” because the letter was written to Jews in Rome, who were used to living by the dictates of the Old Testament laws. Today, what is in Romans 7:6 applies to every child of God regardless of where you are.
You are to serve God in the new way of the Spirit. That new way of the Spirit for divine service doesn’t have specific human rules attached to it. No! The guide is the Holy Spirit and the Word of God. That is why preachers of today don’t serve God like Old Testament priests. Why? Because God wants to be served not by human efforts but by revelation in His ways. Godly service is not mechanised in the realm of grace, so don’t make it as such. Obey God, flow by the direction of the Spirit, and walk in His ways.
