Separation in Friendship Is not Always Evil

[14] “And the LORD said to Abram, after Lot had separated from him: “Lift your eyes now and look from the place where you are—northward, southward, eastward, and westward; [15] for all the land which you see I give to you and your descendants forever. [16] And I will make your descendants as the dust of the earth; so that if a man could number the dust of the earth, then your descendants also could be numbered. [17] Arise, walk in the land through its length and its width, for I give it to you.” – Genesis 13:14-17 (NKJV)

In my few years of life, I have had the privilege of having multiple friends from school. As I grew, many of them got seeded out of my life without me actually controlling it. Some of them were very great at communicating, but I simply lost track of them without cause. However, when I contacted God’s vision and began focusing more on what God has called me to do, I realised that separation in friendship is not always evil. In fact, some of them are beneficial in helping you birth out something specific to focus on.

When God told Abraham (then Abram) to leave his father’s home, He never told him to go with Lot, his cousin. But Abraham did it. It seemed nothing was wrong with his decision, and God never said anything bad about it. But over time, Lot’s herdsmen started fighting with Abraham’s herdsmen due to their abundance of possessions. It became so intense that Abraham had to plead with Lot to go his separate way. Guess what? That happened. And just after the separation, God spoke to Abraham about giving him and his descendants the land of Canaan forever. Today, Abraham’s descendants are on that land. Should Abraham have kept Lot with Him in the midst of turmoil, he wouldn’t have heard God clearly. The Bible says in Romans 16:17 (NKJV) that,

“Now I urge you, brethren, note those who cause divisions and offenses, contrary to the doctrine which you learned, and avoid them.”

If you have anybody in your life constantly giving you problems and preventing you from enjoying God’s peace, it’s time to separate from the person. Maybe that person is a childhood friend whom you cherish so much. But hey, having peace is so worth it. Peace will help you hear God clearly. What if God wants to reveal your purpose to you, but lots of distractors surround you? Take some time off to hear God. Your life will shift in no time.

You’re a blessing.

Prayer:

Father, help me to keep those You want to keep and separate from those You want me to separate in my life. In Jesus’ name. Amen!
