“He who speaks from himself seeks his own glory; but He who seeks the glory of the One who sent Him is true, and no unrighteousness is in Him.” - John 7:18 NKJV
Glory is the true nature of something or someone. Because of the fall in Genesis 3, man fell short of the glory God gave him when he was created (Romans 3:23). Fortunately, Christ has solved it (Romans 3:24). But it’s left with man to come into Christ to receive God’s glory upon his life.
When God created us, He never fashioned us to bear our own glory, but His glory. So anyone who seeks his own glory through material possessions, money, and all other immaterial earthly things such as fame, has completely lost the picture. You’re not what you own; you’re who God says you are. In Luke 12:15, Jesus said life (zōē — eternal life) doesn’t consist of the abundance of possessions. In other words, God didn’t enlist any earthly possession as part of your identity in Him.
In John 7:18, Jesus explains that anyone who speaks on his own does so for personal glory. That means, even if you preach Christ but for selfish reasons, you’re not glorifying God with what you’re doing. You don’t have to be a high-profile preacher to know this. It starts where you are now. Watch your motives behind what you do for God. Everything earthly is temporary. Don’t be like Solomon, who had everything but ended up saying multiple times that “all is vanity.” If God has called you, follow Him and do what He tells you with godly motives.
You’re a blessing.
