Rebuke the Discerning, and They Will Gain Knowledge

[25] “Flog a mocker, and the simple will learn prudence; rebuke the discerning, and they will gain knowledge.” – Proverbs 19:25 (NIV)

One category of people that is very easy to correct is discerning (thoughtful) people. Because they think about what others say to them, they are easy (and sometimes slow) to accept corrections and make provisions to adapt their lifestyle and decisions. On the other hand, mockers are hard to correct because they are natural despisers of correction. But I want to ask which side you are on.

Are you a discerning person or a mocker? You can best answer this after a careful evaluation of your life. But Solomon gives a hint of how discerning people behave. The Bible says that when you rebuke the discerning, they will gain knowledge. That means discerning (thoughtful) people add to what they already know when they receive a rebuke (openly or secretly). I don’t know about you. But I’d like to be more discerning each day and accept some suggestions from people to improve my life and other things I do.

Knowledge is not only in one person. What you know is very limited. There are more people with greater experience than you. So, be careful how you speak to others and give respect to older people. May the Lord guide you in knowing the right thing to do in every situation.
