[45] “And if your foot causes you to sin, cut it off. It is better for you to enter life lame, rather than having two feet, to be cast into hell, into the fire that shall never be quenched” – Mark 9:45 (NKJV)
Growing up and studying how God took me from a deprived family and turned me to become His minister, I’ve realised that many people have settled for normalcy in life. They do whatever comes up in their day instead of ordering the day according to the purpose for which they are alive. They go to every kind of funeral, likewise weddings and other secular events. These are the same people who are reluctant to go to church. Many have abandoned God’s call in their lives indirectly by giving more time to earthly things. And by the time they get to understand how far they’ve drifted from the call, rectifying the problem becomes hard.
Think of Peter, who didn’t know that God brought him to the world to preach to the Israelites until Jesus showed up and trained him. The process of making him a preacher and the solid rock of Jesus’ church (see Matthew 16:18) cost him his marriage. But in all his epistles, I never saw, for once, that Peter regretted following Jesus, although he gave up so many things in his life. Such is what it means to purge one’s life.
If God wants to make you who He created you to be, but you’ve drifted far off too much, He will separate you from your routine way of living. Why? To create a distraction-free environment for you to hear Him well.
So, when Jesus said, “And if your foot causes you to sin, cut it off. It is better for you to enter life lame, rather than having two feet, to be cast into hell…”, He was speaking of purging lives of worldly distractions that keep them from hearing and following Him, not doing surgery to take out your legs.
Today, as you read this devotional, pray for God to purge your life from all unnecessary distractions and relationships that keep you from following His will in your life. I pray for the divine enablement upon your life to do this effectively.
You’re a blessing.
Prayer:
Father, help me to purge my life from all forms of distractions and ungodly relationships that prevent me from hearing You clearly and following Your ways. In Jesus’ name. Amen!
