“Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom: and with all thy getting get understanding.” — Proverbs 4:7 KJV
Probably you’ve read Proverbs 4:7 several times and have heard that simple statement: “Wisdom is the principal thing.” However, have you, for once, meditated on the second part of the scripture — “… and with all thy getting, get understanding”?
The word “getting” in the above verse means “possessions or wealth.” So the scripture says that it’s not wrong to get wealth. In fact, get them. But as you get them, get understanding.
Now notice that Solomon didn’t say, “… get understanding too” in that verse. That implies the spiritual understanding that defines the purpose of each possession you have should not be your afterthought; you must live with it.
Several people consciously or unconsciously define life by the number of possessions they have. But Jesus said in Luke 12:15 that life (eternal) doesn’t consist of the abundance of possessions.
Assuming you’re a young man with a good-paying job, a beautiful wife, and about two children and have built a nice house, reading this right now. Maybe, you’ve gotten deceived by the devil to think that that’s all about life. But it’s a lie.
In synchrony with what Jesus said in Luke 12:15 and what Solomon said in Proverbs 4:7, possessing a spiritual understanding of why you have what you have is more important than those possessions themselves.
For example, having two cars doesn’t mean you’ve made it in life. Why? Because even some unbelievers have more cars than you and yet without any understanding. When God gives you a spiritual understanding that your cars are to help you fulfil your purpose, you’ll never rate your life by any of your possession.
Without the presence of that car, you might be constantly late to the workplace, spend too much money on public transport and continually bear the discomfort of getting to places God ordained you to go not as early as you want. With this understanding, a car doesn’t become a luxury to you but a tool to maximise life and time.
Understanding gives meaning to everything you do and have. On the outside, people may rate your life with what you have, but deep within you, you’ll know that God is the one who has blessed you to get those things in order to fulfil your purpose.
You’re a blessing.
Prayer
Father, help me to understand the reasons behind every possession I have and why things happen. Let me not succumb to the deceitfulness of life to disregard Your blessings lavished upon my life to fulfil purpose. In the name of Jesus. Amen!
