[6] “Do not exalt yourself in the presence of the king,
And do not stand in the place of the great;
[7] For it is better that he say to you,
“Come up here,”
Than that you should be put lower in the presence of the prince,
Whom your eyes have seen.” – Proverbs 25:6-7 (NKJV)
How does it feel for a person to come and boast before the president of your country? I suppose such a person can do that because he feels relevant in society. Right? However, according to the Bible, boasting in the presence of a king (someone of very high influence) in Christ is foolishness. It can invite undue humiliation to a person, no matter his level of influence in society.
Look at the life of Jesus! He was (and is still king) of the entire universe. But when people insulted Him, He didn’t revile back (1 Peter 2:23). He was so quiet before Pilate that Pilate himself marvelled (see Mark 15:3-4). Besides knowing that He ought to die and save all humanity, Jesus knew that boasting before Pilate was not wise. Learn from this!
Maybe you’ve read several books and improved your knowledge in your area of career or calling in Christ, or you could have preached the gospel to millions. Can you live humbly despite your high level of influence? Many people may know you by what you do, but your character will sustain who you are to them privately. Never forget this!
You’re a blessing.
Prayer:
Father, guide me in Your way always. Help me to live humbly and never to pride myself in what I’ve achieved in times past. In Jesus’ name. Amen!
