Hiding Your Background Can Sometimes be a Wise Decision

[10] “Esther had not revealed her people or family, for Mordecai had charged her not to reveal it. [11] And every day Mordecai paced in front of the court of the women’s quarters, to learn of Esther’s welfare and what was happening to her.” – Esther 2:10-11 (NKJV)

As a computer scientist actively working in the tech world, one of the predominant things I have seen within a few years of service is how employers stress years of experience in job descriptions. Most of them ask background-related questions during interviews. Even though it’s good, it can’t always be applied to the work of the ministry or in a believer’s life. Why do I say that? The world judges you based on what you have done in the past; God looks at your rich potential and calls you by name.

Queen Vashti misbehaved for a time during King Artaxerxes’ reign in Persia. She remained married to the king, but she lost her queenship to the king, even as a wife. So, the king decided to replace her. That was why a beauty contest was held in the whole province of Persia. And to God’s glory, Esther, a Jew, was a part of the selected women. In those days, the chosen women were supposed to undergo beauty purification for almost a year before appearing before the king.

Mordecai charged Esther not to say anything about her background and where she came from. I always wondered why. It’s because several people hated Jews for no justifiable reason. So, because of that, if they found out that Esther was a Jew, they would have thrown her out.

Hiding your background can sometimes be a wise decision if you want to get a high position in a place, especially work-related as a Christian. You don’t need to lie about your life; you just have to be quiet about some details in your life, for God’s sake. In a generation where people are flaunting their wealth and social backgrounds online, be wise in what you put out there.

You’re a blessing.

Prayer:

Father, help me to keep quiet on the details of my life that don’t require unbelievers and unfamiliar people to know about me. In Jesus’ name. Amen!
