“When they saw the star, they rejoiced with exceedingly great joy. And when they had come into the house, they saw the young Child with Mary His mother, and fell down and worshiped Him. And when they had opened their treasures, they presented gifts to Him: gold, frankincense, and myrrh.” - Matthew 2:10-11 NKJV
When the Magi (wise men) decided to follow the star to the place Jesus was, they didn’t leave their country empty-handed. They carried three gifts: gold, frankincense, and myrrh, to present to little Jesus as part of their worship. The gifts were three, but the people were more than three.
Yes, God isn’t served with human hands as if He needed anything (Acts 17:25). But these wise men knew about honouring the Lord with their substance as written in Proverbs 3:9.
Honour the LORD with thy substance,
Proverbs 3:9 (KJV)
and with the firstfruits of all thine increase:
Jesus was too little to see and receive those gifts, but they presented them. You have privilege in Christ, and nobody has to force you to give or support God’s work. But out of reverence to the Lord, you should consider going into his house not empty-handed.
God doesn’t need your money. But He has made a way that you can honour Him with your substance through the various Christ-centered ministries that continue to impact lives daily around the world. Don’t worship the Lord with your heart alone, but with your hands also.
You’re a blessing.
