[16] “When you fast, do not look somber as the hypocrites do, for they disfigure their faces to show others they are fasting. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full.” – Matthew 6:16 (NIV)
Fasting is one of the difficult spiritual disciplines many believers in Christ find doing. Many think of fasting as a hunger strike in their lives and not a way to draw closer to God. So when church leaders proclaim a fast, they murmur, showing they are unwilling to do it. Even today, many people don’t like taking personal fasts. But nobody has ever drawn closer to God without intentionality.
There are some attitudes scripture recommends that Christians should put up during fasting in order to both make it private and effective. One of them is putting up a lively face. Jesus said in Matthew 6:16 that don’t look somber when you fast. When you do that, you’re actually mimicking hypocrites who fast to show others that they are fasting. Today, God wants your relationship with Him so private that He doesn’t want people (except for your spouse if you’re married) to know some secrets He shares with you.
People who disfigure their faces when they fast are people who fast for people-pleasing and not to get close to God. Don’t be like that. Stay close to God and live as you would live on a day you’re not fasting when you’re actually fasting. The Lord is Your strength.
You’re a blessing.
Prayer:
Father, help me to draw closer to You anytime I fast. In the name of Jesus. Amen!
