Accent Synchrony Through Closeness

[73] After a little while, those standing there went up to Peter and said, “Surely you are one of them; your accent gives you away.” – Matthew 26:73 (NIV)

One of the times Jesus’ team went under the greatest attack was during the period prior to Jesus’ crucifixion. The disciples grew in fear after Jesus was arrested in the Garden of Gethsemane. Peter, wanting to monitor Jesus’ trial proceedings, carefully followed through. One time, after a while in the courtyard, people came to tell Peter that he was one of the disciples. But they added, “… your accent gives you away.” Wait a minute! Peter thought his voice never changed after walking with Jesus for three years. But it did. So, even though he was denying Jesus, his voice exposed him. I see this as both good and bad news.

As bad news, I’d say this, especially to leaders. You may never know how easily a team member can betray you or pretend not even to have walked with you in times of distress. So, just because you have team members around doesn’t mean they’ll stand by you when times are tough. Now, as good news, people who walk closely together will begin talking like one another, depending on their level of closeness. That is especially good for marital couples, which some even grow so deep in intimacy that they not only talk like each other but even start looking physically like each other.

Accent synchrony develops the moment people begin to do something together. It’s in churches, marriages, friendships, and even some workplaces. It is normal (and even beneficial), and there’s nothing wrong with it. But just as it can happen in good places, it also occurs in bad places. That is why 1 Corinthians 15:33 (NKJV) says,

[33] Do not be deceived: “Evil company corrupts good habits.

So, be mindful of your associations. And pay attention to those you allow closely in your circle.

You are a blessing.

Prayer:

Father, thank You for Your gift of eternal life in me. Help me to know You better each day and rally the right people around me. In the name of Jesus. Amen!
