[27] To this John replied, “A person can receive only what is given them from heaven.” – John 3:27 (NIV)
John the Baptist was constantly questioned whether he was the Messiah. That confusion heightened when Jesus started His ministry, and both had disciples. Many people turned to follow Jesus, and John’s disciples were constantly declining. It’s like a new pastor arriving in town and claiming a large portion of the town’s populace, as other churches in the same town have reduced membership. These days, many ministries are very concerned about membership, so won’t it be worrying to the pastor in charge of the declining membership of the church? Yes, it will be.
However, John the Baptist was very wise. He attributed the disciples he had to God’s blessing, not to his own labour or effort. So, if the people were leaving to follow Jesus, it was not his doing but God’s doing. That means, in ministry, there are some members you can lose as a church pastor, even if you do everything right. Not everyone who leaves church is as a result of offence or disagreement. For some, God Himself tells them to go, and when that happens, you cannot control it.
A person can receive only what is given them from heaven. Yes, you may say you worked for this or that, but what if God didn’t give you the air to breathe and the energy to do that work? Never forget to give praise to God and acknowledge the work of His grace in your life no matter what you have.
You are a blessing.
Prayer:
Father, thank You for everything You do to keep me safe and secure. May I never forget to live grateful for Your provision. In the name of Jesus. Amen!
