What Is Your Primary Desire in Life?

[4] “One thing I have desired of the LORD,
That will I seek:
That I may dwell in the house of the LORD
All the days of my life,
To behold the beauty of the LORD,
And to inquire in His temple.” – Psalms 27:4 (NKJV)

What is your primary desire in life? Can you sincerely answer this question? I see this as somehow difficult for many people in this world, not because they don’t have desires, but because their desires tend to change as they age. For example, years ago, I asked some children what they wanted to become in future. Some of those kids have grown to become adults today, but their career paths are nowhere near what they told me. So, as you can see, desires change. I suppose mine also changed, and so did David’s (in the Bible). But what accounts for this?

People tend to make decisions based on the level of knowledge they have. So, a child may change their career path when they mature because they will be exposed to a lot of information in the world, which will impact their choices. What about believers? Some people become Christians and join a church for diverse reasons. I was surprised when I heard a woman say she joined a church because she wanted a man to marry within the church she joined. For such a person, her primary reason for going to church is not for God to impact her life but to socialise. Won’t it affect her reception of ministry? Yes, it will.

After ascending the throne as Israel’s king, David had all the riches he wanted. He had all the wives, children, and servants; name them. He had everything. Instead of priding himself on his possessions, he wrote in Psalm 27:4 that his primary desire is to dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of his life. What about you? After getting all the money, connections, business successes and more, will God still be your number one priority in your life? If not, please take a moment to evaluate your life. Pursue all those ambitions as long as they align with God’s plan for your life, but don’t drop God Himself down the priority list.
