Do Not Be Yoked Together with Unbelievers

[14] “Do not be yoked together with unbelievers. For what do righteousness and wickedness have in common? Or what fellowship can light have with darkness?” – 2 Corinthians 6:14 (NIV)

Have you been to a large farm where people use oxen to plough their lands? If not, you may have seen it in pictures on the internet. That wood usually used to tie the oxen together for the plough, mostly in pairs, is called “yoke.” The moment the yoke is fixed, the oxen will move along the same line together. In fact, the yoke is so strong that one ox can’t break off from it. So, if that same device is being discussed in 2 Corinthians 6:14, guess how powerful relationships affect our lives?

The Bible implores believers not to be yoked together with unbelievers. In other words, unbelievers shouldn’t form part of our close relationships circle. And the moment this comes into the scene, it means that a believer should never think of marrying an unbeliever because married couples form part of the category of very close relationships. However, the scripture covers all other relationships too.

Have you realised that many Christians find it hard to work with unbelieving bosses? Well, it’s because many people spend an extreme amount of time at work, so if the work environment doesn’t foster Christianity, obviously, it’s going to get hard. If you are facing that challenge, know that God is with you.

As much as you are focused on work, make it a point to spend time with God even as you work. Don’t throw aside your intimacy with God in the name of ‘I am busy.’ No! It’s from that relationship you can get the strength to excel, not just in your work but also in all other areas of your life.

You are a blessing.

Prayer:

Father, help me to manage my relationships with people well. May I never subscribe to compromise no matter where I am. In Jesus’ name. Amen!
