If You Think You Are Standing Firm

[12] “So, if you think you are standing firm, be careful that you don’t fall!” – 1 Corinthians 10:12 (NIV)

When I was a child, I remember hearing some folks frequently quote what is written in 1 Corinthians 10:12. I don’t remember that any of them could mention the scripture vividly. But quoting that scripture deterred a lot of people around me from going near places where temptation would be more assertive in their lives – such as nightclubs and being alone in a room with the opposite sex who’s not your family member. And that also helped me by instilling discipline in my life while growing up.

However, while studying the Bible verse prior to writing this devotional, I realised that Paul referred to what happened to some Israelites in the Old Testament who chose to disobey God’s commands even though they knew what they were not supposed to do. One of the commands to them was that they shouldn’t bow to any other gods. But they did, and God got angry, ending about twenty-four thousand people’s lives that day.

Here is what I can tell you today. Yes, you may have been in a local church where the Word of God is strongly taught with accuracy. You may have been to a theological seminary, so you know every nook and cranny of the Bible. But hey, never get used to God. If you think you are standing firm, just watch your doctrine and life closely, lest you give the devil the opportunity to make sin pleasant in your eyes. Remember that it is a terrible thing to fall into the hands of God!

Prayer:

Father, help me to stand firm in the gospel, allowing no room for compromise in any area of my life. In Jesus’ name. Amen!
