What Does the Bible Say About Artificial Contraception?

Have you ever thought of studying what the Bible says about artificial contraception or birth control? It’s a topic that has been debated by many believers, usually not in physical church settings but in small groups and people’s minds. The perfect answer to this question can be sourced from the Bible, not what people say or think about it. Right? So, let’s dive in.

Many activities and businesses are going on in this world that weren’t there in Biblical times. Examples of such are sports betting, social media, prenuptial agreement, as well as artificial contraception. So, there aren’t specific scriptures that directly address them. However, I believe that the answer to every question is hidden somewhere in the Bible.

What makes contraception bad

With whatever discovery scientists make today that helps make life better, the devil has always used methods to make people use it for bad things. Drugs get abused, and so do contraceptives. I believe God allowed scientists to discover artificial contraceptives to help couples practise healthy family planning because it really takes a lot to raise a family.

However, because contraceptives are on sale, many singles are using them to prevent birth control while having sex with people, which is very bad. Nowadays, many bachelors and spinsters buy condoms and pills more than married couples. And to be frank, it’s cheap, so it’s easily accessible. That is what makes contraception evil. People use it to breach God’s law on sex (reserved for the married) and engage in fornication.

On the other hand, there are married couples who are also using contraceptives to have sex with people who are not their spouses. Because of that, it fosters them to engage in adultery.

You see, all these things are the attitudes of people these days. Therefore, what makes contraception bad or good is how people use it.

Because contraception, especially artificial methods, are recent discoveries, they are widely used by various kinds of people to control birth. As such, some use it to foster sins like fornication and adultery. For singles, they use it to prevent having children after sleeping with others to satisfy their sexual lusts. And for the married but unfaithful, they use it to breach God’s law of purity and faithfulness in marriage. The use of contraceptives for these things makes it bad. But there’s a good one, yet reserved for married couples alone.

How married couples can use artificial contraception well

In 1 Corinthians 7:4-5 (NKJV), the Bible says,

[4] “The wife hath not power of her own body, but the husband: and likewise also the husband hath not power of his own body, but the wife. [5] Defraud ye not one the other, except it be with consent for a time, that ye may give yourselves to fasting and prayer; and come together again, that Satan tempt you not for your incontinency.”

That means if you’re married, you should not deprive your partner of sexual intimacy. But we all know that without sex, there’s no pregnancy. Right? Therefore, since God wants couples to keep having sex, not practising birth control will make them end up having more children than they could take care of. That is where contraception comes in.

A couple may feel like spacing their children within three years. Hence, in order to remain sexually intimate without having kids, they can use artificial contraception to help them. I’m not a gynaecologist or health expert. So, I don’t know which artificial contraception method is best for everyone, particularly you as a married person. Do your research with your spouse and agree on which ones work best for you both and the family you want to raise with your spouse.

In conclusion, I would say that artificial contraception is neither good nor bad. When the unmarried uses it, it is totally wrong and sinful. But for married couples, they can use it for family planning. As a married person, I would advise you not to practise these things without agreeing with your spouse and God.

May the Lord give you understanding!
