Receiving Jesus as Lord and personal saviour is the most significant decision in life. Since the sole purpose of evangelism is to help people get saved, every Christian ought to be trained spiritually on how to lead unbelievers to receive salvation—the gift of God. The absence of this training would make us unable to perform our ministry of reconciliation in Christ well.
In this article, I cover a simple step-by-step guide any Christian can use to help more unbelievers get saved.
1. Reach out to people
for the Son of Man has come to seek and to save that which was lost.
Luke 19:10 NKJV
We can only seek the lost just like Jesus sought them through evangelism.
On many occasions, most unbelievers don’t even know that they need salvation. That is why evangelism is very significant to God because through its practice we can reach out to people. Even though it has several methods and strategies, the goal is still single, which is to make people know about Jesus.
During Jesus’s ministry time on earth, there were no TV, radio, social media, computers, websites, or even mobile apps to spread the gospel. But today, all these are available. At The Bible Daily Network, our primary method of evangelism is gospel-online campaigns.
Evangelism shouldn’t be limited to only local outreach campaigns. Online methods should also be considered. However, each ministry has a specific mandate given by the Lord.
If you’re a ministry leader or part of a ministry evangelism team, it’ll be good to pray for God to show you which methods to use to reach out to people, plan your outreach upon receiving your answer and then implement the strategy.
2. Preach the Word of God
God has called us to witness Him everywhere we go, and this also involves preaching His Word.
It’s God’s Word we use to reach out to others. Yes, the Holy Spirit inspires us to preach. However, when there’s no spiritual investment made to study the Bible, it becomes difficult to explain the Word of God to people who don’t know anything about Jesus.
Moreover, some people have unfortunately been exposed to false doctrines, making them doubt and question the Truth of God’s Word. So if you’re not a Word student, you might struggle on the mission field. Spend quality time praying and studying the Bible before going out to evangelise.
3. Explain the importance of accepting Jesus into one’s heart
Salvation is necessary not only to serve as a means for people to escape hell but also to help them have an intimate fellowship with God.
During evangelism, believers in Christ must explain the importance of accepting Jesus as Lord and personal Savior to every lost person (unbelievers) encountered on the mission field. If this doesn’t get done, these unbelievers won’t understand or have a good reason why they must surrender to Jesus. They must know that Jesus has paid for their sin.
4. Ensure they unbelievers believe in Jesus from their hearts
that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.
Romans 10:9 NKJV
After preaching the Word of God, the next thing we (Christians) must check from the lost people we’ve preached unto is whether or not they have believed in Jesus from their hearts (not their minds). In other words, we must be sure whether they got convicted by the message of Christ they heard. If the conviction occurs, giving their life to Jesus becomes easy.
We believe in Jesus in our hearts, not our minds.

One thing I’ve noticed during evangelism is that if people get convicted by the Holy Spirit through the message of Christ preached, the servant of God will know by the inward witness of the Spirit of God. If they’re not, they’ll still doubt and even ask unnecessary questions about why they must accept Jesus. Note that we don’t believe in Jesus with our minds but in our hearts.
5. Understand how faith works
Every unbeliever needs faith to be born again. We’re saved by grace through faith. Since the Bible says that faith comes by hearing and hearing by the Word of God (Romans 10:17), faith comes alive in the heart of any lost person who gets convicted by the message of Christ. However, they are new in the faith and hence, don’t know how faith in Christ works.
Faith works by love (Galatians 5:6) and by speaking (2 Corinthians 4:13). The convicted unbeliever doesn’t understand what the love of God is because they don’t know God (1 John 4:8). That is why they have to be guided by Christians to speak a prayer for their salvation from the depth of their hearts.
Faith works by love and by speaking.

6. Guiding them to say a prayer to be saved
“The Salvation prayer” as known in many ministries today, is a short prayer an unbeliever says after a Christian accepts Jesus into their hearts to be born again. Jesus is the one who saves, not the salvation prayer. However, this kind of prayer unleashes the faith conceived in the unbeliever’s convicted heart for Christ to come into their lives afresh so that they’ll receive salvation.
Salvation is essential, but a guide to help people get saved makes us (Christians) deliver the ministry of reconciliation we’ve received from the Lord more effectively. I hope this helps you.
