How To Keep God’s Peace In You

According to the Bible, “Shalom” (Hebrew: שָׁלוֹם šālōm) is a Hebrew word transliteration of peace. It is sometimes used idiomatically to mean both hello and goodbye.

Peace is a priority in every nation. Government security agencies spend millions to maintain peace in their various countries. And that’s awesome. But there’s this peace God gives that transcends beyond the thinking of worldly people. It’s called inner peace.

What does it mean to have Inner Peace?

Possessing inner peace means being spiritually and mentally sound. And the only giver of such peace is God. When you have it, it doesn’t mean there is no issue or adversity in your life. Instead, amidst them, there’s the possession of profound calmness in your heart which marvels the worldly people.

Today, I want to share how to keep God’s peace in you using three Biblical ways. I hope you’re ready.

1. Know You Have God’s Peace

To keep God’s peace in you as a believer, first recognise that you have His peace in your heart, whether you feel like it or not.

In John 14, Jesus made some of His last statements to His disciples before His crucifixion. He stated emphatically in verse 27 that, He has given them His peace, but not as the world gives. Now, that speech is unto us, Christians.

The world gives you peace by preventing civil wars and environmental conflicts. But the peace Jesus has given focuses on ensuring your heart is calm. That one is more powerful because, amid challenges, it makes you undisturbed. That is the exact thing Jesus manifested when He slept calmly in the boat while the disciples were busily finding ways and means to stabilise the boat in the storm (Matthew 8:23-26). Friend, you have that same peace. Hallelujah!

Walk in the consciousness of your spiritual inheritance, and you will not be moved by what you see or hear from people or the cynical reports from the media. God’s peace within you will remain constant.

2. Keep Your Mind Focused On Jesus

Secondly, consistently and consciously look up to Jesus for everything in life. Be intentional to do this; lest you become self-conscious, paving a freeway for the devil to plague your mind with fear and insecurity.

When Jesus walked in the sea, Peter so dared to walk on it, and he did for a while. Peter kept his gaze on Jesus as he walked on the sea. He was not initially focused on the raging sea and storm around him. But when he got distracted, he began sinking. But why? Because he lost focus on Jesus (Matthew 14:29-30). He wanted to find stability in the surroundings, which was lost, making him lose sight of the Prince of peace who stood right before him. When you look unto the world to find peace, you’ll be like Peter; losing balance in life. The world doesn’t give what Jesus gives, never.

Isaiah 26:3 (KJV) says,

“Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in thee.”

Let your eyes and mind become focused on Jesus all the time.

3. Eliminate Distractions – Forego Toxic Relationships

One sure way to keep the peace of God in our hearts is to forego and refrain from toxic or distracting relationships. Association brings assimilation. That means what and who you freely allow in your life becomes a part of you with time as you embrace them.

Desist mingling with people who threaten your spiritual sanity, as well as those who speak only negative and discouraging words to you. Mingle with like-minded believers.

The Bible admonishes us not to forsake the assembly of the saints (Hebrews 10:25). Why? Because people of the same faith understand the peace of our Lord Jesus. They have tasted and seen the goodness of God in their lives just as you want. They’ll continually encourage and support you as you continue your walk with God. Associate with them.

In conclusion, know that Jesus is the Prince of peace. He was given to us as a free gift by the Father when the world was in turmoil and haphazard (Ephesians 2:8, John 3:16). He has come to stay in our hearts. And because of this truth, His peace is in us (John 14:27). It is the peace within us that flows out to affect our world around us. So to have a life of peace, accept Jesus today, and embrace His peace in as your spiritual inheritance in you so passionately. You’ll not be intimidated by the issues of life. You’re a blessing.
