“Let nothing be done through selfish ambition or conceit, but in lowliness of mind let each esteem others better than himself.” — Philippians 2:3 NKJV
Many people live so consumed in themselves that they feel they’re better than their fellows. Sometimes, children put up this behaviour, comparing their parents’ provision to that of their friends. And those who don’t have financially stable parents start looking down on themselves. But let all these things go by. What does God’s word say?
In Philippians 2:3, Paul brought out one powerful principle guiding how we’re supposed to behave as children of God.
- We should do nothing out of selfish ambition or conceit.
- We must walk in lowliness of mind, which will help us esteem others better than ourselves.
Look at this. You have unique qualities that I don’t have. Even if I’m so knowledgeable in many things, there are still things you can do that I cannot. In the same way, I have some qualities I can use to help you that you’ll not get from anywhere. So if I esteem you better than myself as you also do me, won’t we focus on using our strengths to help ourselves? Yes. Right?
Enough of self-consumption. Learn both to receive God’s love and give to others also. Esteem others better than you. In that way, you’ll value them and focus less on their weaknesses.
Above all, get rid of offences because it’s the primary way the devil uses to wax cold God’s love in His children’s hearts (see Matthew 24:12).
You’re a blessing.
Prayer:
Father, thank You for teaching me that I ought to esteem others better than me. No matter the blessedness of divine wisdom You’ve given me, teach me to be humble as I speak to others. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
