[9] “not returning evil for evil or reviling for reviling, but on the contrary blessing, knowing that you were called to this, that you may inherit a blessing.” — 1 Peter 3:9 NKJV
We live in an evil age (see Galatians 1:4), where many people don’t care about committing cruel acts against others, even close family members, to have their way in whatever they want. Months ago, I heard of thieves robbing a church in South Africa during a live service. These are people who don’t even care about how they themselves are going to suffer for stealing in God’s house. What a tragedy! That shows us how the fear of God is missing in several lives today. But as a Christian, what can you do in response to these things?
God’s Word says in 1 Peter 3:9 that you were called to do good. And that means you are not to return evil for evil but for blessing. Do you know why? It’s because God doesn’t want your mind to be filled with mixed knowledge of good and evil. Instead, He wants your mind to be filled with thoughts of His goodness every day, so much so that evil won’t be part of your thinking pattern.
Indeed, you cannot walk in good works in Christ with your strength or a spiritually unrenewed mind. That is why you must be intentional about spending quality time with God daily, especially in the morning, before stepping out. It strengthens you in God and readies you to face the day with a refreshed spirit.
Decide to do good to people whether they pay you with good deeds or not. Let not the evil character of people affect the good behaviour God has built up in you as you continue to stay consistent in fellowship with Him.
You’re a blessing.
Prayer:
Father, help me to experience greater heights of walking in love toward all manner of people in this evil world. In Jesus’ name. Amen!
