Whoever Spares the Rod Hates Their Children

[24] “Whoever spares the rod hates their children, but the one who loves their children is careful to discipline them.” – Proverbs 13:24 (NIV)

Children, children, children. Three times, I intentionally wrote that word. They are loving but, at the same time, need a lot of discipline to get well raised. In Ephesians 6:4, the Bible charges fathers to bring up their children in the fear and admonition of the Lord. That implies that parents have a lot of responsibility for their children. I’ve seen couples say how demanding it is when children come into their marriage. It’s never the same.

One of the purposes of marriage is to protect children. Why do I say that? If it takes two (husband and wife) to conceive a child, surely it’ll take two to raise. Right? Children are more disciplined when their parents are the ones doing that. Statistics have proven that children raised in broken homes usually end up as part of the bad people in society, especially when the parent whom the children stay with don’t have a solid commitment to God and the church.

As scripture has said in Proverbs 13:24, whoever spares the rod hates their children. The laws of your country may frown upon using rods, like a cane or belt, to discipline your child. But I believe the principles in the Bible supersede what human laws say. Don’t keep silent on your children or watch them go wayward. No! Discipline them very well. They will thank you later in their lives.

You are a blessing.

Prayer:

Father, empower every parent out there to discipline their children more. Give hope to every parent whose child is going wayward, oh God. In Jesus’ name. Amen!
