[38] “Watch and pray, lest you enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.” – Mark 14:38 (NKJV)
How would you feel to work so hard alone only to come home to see no food? Very frustrating. Right? Yes, every person wants to be assured that with all the labour they put in their daily work, there is some security for them. You probably expect your salary to be paid at the end of every month. Isn’t it? Yes, it is. But imagine Jesus taking His closest three disciples to the Garden of Gethsemane to pray with Him, only for Him to come back to see them sleeping. Oh boy, no leader wants to see that. But unfortunately, that is what happens.
Usually, followers of leaders are not as strong as the leader himself. Look at Moses in the Old Testament. God decided to take from his spirit to fill the other seventy men who would help him administer to the Israelites (see Numbers 11:25). Did you know what that meant? Moses had the spiritual capacity of over 70 men in him. And guess what? That man never broke down. I can’t fathom how powerful that is. Hmm!
There are many leaders who do the work many people would have done because they are alone. Usually, many employers work more than employees. Jesus laboured more than the disciples, yet this trio (Peter, James and John) still couldn’t wait for him to pray. They slept off. Oh indeed, the Spirit was willing, but their flesh was weak. Sometimes, if you want to pray, you may feel tired. But let me tell you that you are not in the flesh to be weakened by it. No! You are in the Spirit (see Romans 8:9). So, when you take spiritual matters seriously, the strength of Christ in your spirit will override your weakened flesh, so God can help you do the impossible.
You are a blessing.
Prayer:
Father, help me always to keep the strength in my spirit robust as I live to fulfil Your will daily. In Jesus’ name. Amen!
