The Lord as a Judge Over Sin

[10] And He said, “What have you done? The voice of your brother’s blood cries out to Me from the ground. [11] So now you are cursed from the earth, which has opened its mouth to receive your brother’s blood from your hand. [12] When you till the ground, it shall no longer yield its strength to you. A fugitive and a vagabond you shall be on the earth.” – Genesis 4:10-12 (NKJV)

God is a God of love. He has multifaceted ways of functioning, but His being is found in love. He loved man, which was one of the major reasons He created him–both male and female. But a time came when people were breaching His statutes, forcing Him to unveil “the Judge” aspect of His functionality–first to Adam, Eve and the serpent, and second, to Cain. I want to talk about the Lord as a judge over sin using Cain’s story in this devotional.

A time came when Cain and Abel had to go and sacrifice before God using the produce of their hands. Abel did His well, and his sacrifice pleased God. But Cain didn’t. However, Cain got angry because his offering didn’t please God. So God asked him, saying,

[6] “Why are you angry? And why has your countenance fallen? [7] If you do well, will you not be accepted? And if you do not do well, sin lies at the door. And its desire is for you, but you should rule over it.” Genesis 4:6-7 (NKJV)

When you read further, you’ll realise that Cain didn’t reply to God. He was too furious to answer the Almighty. And because of that, the devil took that opportunity to sow hatred in his heart towards his brother, which he later used to murder him. At this point, the situation had gotten worse.

Later, God came around and asked Cain where his brother was. But he answered in an angry tone: “I do not know. Am I my brother’s keeper?” [see Genesis 4:9 (NKJV)]. God didn’t probe further to know where Abel was because He knew what had already happened to him. Then, from verses 10-12 of Genesis 4, He meted out strong judgment over Cain’s life. Today, the effect of that punishment is still effective as worldly systems are being built to counter the purposes of God in this generation. What a tragedy!

When God tells you to turn away from sin, He just wants to protect you. It is a terrible thing to fall into the hands of the Almighty God (see Hebrews 10:31). Live clean before the Lord, whether people are watching you or not. It is for your own good.

You’re a blessing.

Prayer:

Father, help me live a pure life that glorifies You daily, devoid of any trace of sin. In Jesus’ name. Amen!
