“Children’s children are a crown to the aged, and parents are the pride of their children.” — Proverbs 17:6 NIV
Once upon a time, many of my extended family members, particularly cousins, arrived at my parent’s house to spend the end-of-year holidays. One of my grandmothers was around. And anytime she saw each of her grandchildren, she was so happy that I could hardly explain it.
I always wondered why she was so enthused to see many of her grandchildren around. Then, later on, I read Proverbs 17:6, where the preacher Solomon explains the crown of aged people.
He says grandchildren (children’s children) are aged people’s crowns. But I did more study about the word “crown” used in the context of that scripture. It means “wreath.”
A wreath, like a crown, is worn on the head to signify the carriage of glory concerning something. So in the context of Proverbs 17:6, it’s normal for every grandparent to be joyful seeing one’s grandchild(ren).
I’m very young. So I couldn’t explain the behaviour of my grandmother. But now I know from God’s Word that there’s absolutely nothing wrong with her expression of joy.
Maybe you’re a young man, woman or recently married person reading this right now. So probably you don’t have a grandchild yet. I want to inspire you that don’t fret. When you see a grandparent, especially a grandmother, expressing joy upon seeing the grandchild, don’t be surprised. They’re just fulfilling scripture. Let them enjoy the beauties of life. But never forget to preach the Word unto their souls for they to be saved.
You’re a blessing.
Prayer
Oh God, help me to honour the aged people in my house and vicinity with utmost respect and honour. Help me treat them well for your glory. In the mighty name of Jesus. Amen!
