[21] “Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ.” – Ephesians 5:21 (NIV)
From Ephesians 5:21 to Ephesians 6:1-9, Paul was giving extensive instructions to Christian households concerning how they ought to behave. One is found in Ephesians 5:21, where he said believers should submit to one another out of reverence for Christ. But what does it mean?
Well, whenever the word “submission” gets mentioned, many people attribute it to wives in marital homes. But submission, according to scripture, isn’t only for wives. It is also for all people. Why? Because in Christ, there is neither male nor female (see Galatians 3:28). In marriage, the husband ought to submit to Christ, as the wife submits to him. But in God’s kingdom, it’s all unto Christ and one another in the same divine reverence. Why that?
The Body of Christ, the Church, comprises many parts. And for every part to function well, believers must live and work harmoniously with one another. So, dear one, you may be top-notch in any area of life. However, that doesn’t mean nobody should speak into your life! When the mission is set out right, submit to other people’s views about that Christ-centred mission to keep it moving forward. However, keep the main thing the main thing.
You are a blessing.
Prayer:
Father, help me to submit to other believers well so that I will keep moving on in Your providential way for my life. In Jesus’ name. Amen!
