Stop Trusting in Mere Humans

[22] “Stop trusting in mere humans, who have but a breath in their nostrils. Why hold them in esteem?” – Isaiah 2:22 (NIV)

In Psalm 20:7, the Psalmist says that some trust in chariots, others in horses. But where is your trust? Is it in the name of the Lord or in humans? Do you know the number of people who have placed their trust in people, and those people have failed them miserably? I heard the story of a recent graduate who got laid off after completing her national service (a mandatory one-year job for the state of Ghana) after being promised job security months ago. Isn’t that sad? Yes, it is. But all these happen when people place trust in humans.

In Isaiah 2:22, the Lord issued a stern warning to all people. Even though it was a prophecy initially directed towards the Israelites, it still applies to us today. He said that we should stop trusting in mere humans, who have but a breath in their nostrils. Think about this. People are actually living because they can breathe. The moment they cease breathing for at least 3 minutes, they’ll die. So, if humans are that fragile, why depend on them?

God in man makes a person different. The fleshly vessel cannot be trusted. But at least, because of God in him, He can make the person somewhat dependable. However, despite the rich inclusion of God in believers’ lives today, many Christians are still unreliable. If you are a pastor, leader, CEO, president or leader reading this, build your corporation, ministry or organisation in a way that everyone, including yourself, won’t be indispensable. The vision should live on regardless of the people involved in it. In that way, there’ll be a higher guarantee of success in that organisation than one built around one person.
