[5] “Now He could do no mighty work there, except that He laid His hands on a few sick people and healed them.” – Mark 6:5 (NKJV)
By the grace of God, I have served in our ministry for some years. Whenever it’s time to preach, I remember that my work is to preach, but how the people will receive the gospel depends on them. I learnt this the hard way after studying the parable of the sower in the Bible, where Jesus explained that different kinds of people in an audience receive the gospel.
Therefore, as a preacher, you cannot determine the state of heart of the people who listen to the Word you preach. Some people in your congregation may be spies. Some may receive the Word and use it to bear fruit. Again, others are unserious people who are just there to add up to the number. Your work is to obey God, not really to control people. But ensuring the congregation follows the sermon as you preach is always good.
With that said, let me switch to the listener. Dear one, you must learn how to position your spirit to receive the gospel. By saying this, there are some things you should not do when God’s Word is being preached. One of them is having a divided attention; another important one is looking unto the preacher with a familiar mindset. For that, avoid it at all costs. Jesus went to His hometown to preach, and they couldn’t receive the gospel because they knew His background. He couldn’t do mighty works there because of the people’s atmosphere of unbelief, familiarity and offence. Learn from this, and don’t be used to preachers of the Word.
You’re a blessing.
Prayer:
Father, help me always to position my spirit to hear the gospel whenever Your servant is preaching it. In Jesus’ name. Amen!
