[16] “Moreover, when you fast, do not be like the hypocrites, with a sad countenance. For they disfigure their faces that they may appear to men to be fasting. Assuredly, I say to you, they have their reward. [17] But you, when you fast, anoint your head and wash your face, [18] so that you do not appear to men to be fasting, but to your Father who is in the secret place; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you openly.” – Matthew 6:16-18 (NKJV)
Gone are the days when people looked so hungry when they were fasting. They looked so pitiful as if fasting was a hunger blow to them rather than it being for their own benefit. If you’re consistently seeing such people in your life, then it’s okay because it shows that, at least, you’re in the company of people conscious of their spiritual growth. But to me, I hardly see fasting people looking pitiful before me. Nevertheless, hear what Jesus said about such people.
He says that when we fast, we should maintain good composure during the period. We shouldn’t go all-out dry on our faces because we are fasting. Why? Because fasting is not about showing off to people. It’s about consecrating yourself to God. What Jesus taught is just like sex between married couples; it is always kept private. That is why any pornographic material out there on the internet is not good for anybody’s consumption, including married couples.
God knows that you are committing your fast to Him, and for whatever reason you are doing it, He will reward you for your labour. He is the God who sees all things. Do not be a fan of displaying your spiritual retreats to people. Worship God in Spirit and in Truth. He is with you dearly.
You’re a blessing.
Prayer:
Father, fulfil my spirit’s yearning for you whenever I fast so that I will not even feel I’m hungry and even have to break the fast until it’s time. In Jesus’ name. Amen!
