[42] “Give to him who asks you, and from him who wants to borrow from you do not turn away.” – Matthew 5:42 (NKJV)
In a world where many struggle financially, borrowing has become a norm, even in church. The sad thing about this is that some believers take advantage of familiarity and never pay back the money they borrow from people they worship with. This has further caused church hurts and even brood mistrust among believers. What a tragedy!
Jesus said in Matthew 5:42 that we are not supposed to hold back from giving to those who ask us for help. Secondly, we should also lend to those who want to borrow from us. That means lending is not evil in Christ, as well as borrowing. But with the rise of mistrust, the question is, should believers keep lending to untrustworthy people? That’s a real question to consider.
I don’t think we should breach Jesus’ Word because of the changing things happening in our lives. Just because a church member borrowed money and didn’t pay it back doesn’t mean everyone is like that. Jesus is the standard, not any man. Moreover, the principles in the Word are also not subject to change under any circumstances.
It is better to obey Jesus than to trust people. So, when lending to another person, check within your spirit before doing so. Don’t give just because the person is in dire need of it. Give because you want to. And don’t give out of an account you’ll need the money later for. So that just in case that person doesn’t pay back, you’ll not be in financial trouble in your life.
You’re a blessing.
Prayer:
Father, thank You for Your love. Please help me to live a life of integrity in this evil age, where people don’t care to do evil things for inappropriate financial gain. In Jesus’ name. Amen!
