Leave Behind The Unnecessary Load When Obeying God

“So Abram went, as the Lord had told him; and Lot went with him. Abram was seventy-five years old when he set out from Harran.” — Genesis 12:4 NIV

It was a long time since God told Abraham (then Abram) to leave his father’s household full of idols and evil things. But when the instruction came, Abraham delayed obeying God.

Genesis 12:1 starts by saying, “Now God had said to Abram …”. That means there was a time difference between when God gave Abraham the instruction and when he obeyed. However, he committed one error as he obeyed God. Abraham allowed Lot, his nephew, to follow him.

God never told Abraham to leave his father’s household with his cousin. He told him to just leave. And if Abraham may add another person to be with him, it would have been Sarai, his wife, not Lot.

Just a few verses later, Lot’s herdsmen fought with Abraham’s herdsmen because of how their cattle were struggling to graze from the same small land since they were many (Genesis 13:7). Later, Abraham parted ways with his cousin.

It wasn’t because Lot was a wicked man. Instead, he wasn’t part of the people God needed in Abraham’s life to bless him.

It’s not everyone God has ordained to be with you when you’re obeying God to do something.

It’s not everyone God has ordained to be with you when you’re obeying God to do something. And this thing even gets more tricky in people with leadership abilities, where they command a following. There were times Jesus invited only a few of his twelve disciples to be with him. Why? It’s by God’s leadership and divine wisdom.

Leave behind the unnecessary load when obeying God. That load could be people, resources and even nasty mentalities. Leave them behind. Let them go!

You cannot embrace the new seasons that God is leading you into your life with old wrong mindsets. It takes time for every seed to germinate. So when God tells you to do something you don’t understand, obey Him completely. In the future, you’ll understand better.

You’re a blessing.

Prayer

Father, give me the strength to offload anything preventing me from obeying you completely. Help me to trust You when I don’t understand what’s going on in my life. In the name of Jesus. Amen!
