[10] “Jesus answered and said to her, “If you knew the gift of God, and who it is who says to you, ‘Give Me a drink,’ you would have asked Him, and He would have given you living water.” – John 4:10 (NKJV)
One of the most dangerous things people do every day is to trivialise the people they meet, speaking to them just anyhow. It saddens me when I see people do that because many of the problems people are praying to God to solve are in the hands of men who will help them. Jesus’ discussion with a woman at the well of Jacob revealed this sad truth about people.
Here was a woman who came to draw water from an ancient well, and the Messiah she had longed to see was before her. Jesus didn’t initially reveal who He was to her but approached her by asking her to give Him water (see John 4:7). Nothing showed that Jesus was thirsty. He just wanted to help the woman. But in those days, a feud existed between the Israelites and the Samaritans. So, those two groups of people were not on talking terms. The woman, knowing this, asked Jesus why He was requesting water since Samaritans had no dealings with Israelites (see John 4:9). And Jesus said, “If you knew the gift of God, and who it is who says to you, ‘Give Me a drink,’ you would have asked Him, and He would have given you living water.”
Just look at that! The woman was startled by Jesus’ reply. So, that opened up the conversation. Then Jesus showed her what she had done in times past with other men. And later, Jesus told her He was (and still is) the Messiah. I tell you, that changed her story. Later, Jesus stayed an extra two days in Samaria, preaching the gospel to them (see John 4:40). Please be careful to speak nicely to people you meet, especially for the first time. Remember that the Bible encourages us to be hospitable to strangers because we don’t know whether we may encounter angels unawares (see Hebrews 13:2). People are valuable; don’t treat them as trash cans.
You’re a blessing.
Prayer:
Father, thank You for the Spirit of wisdom and revelation. Help me to treat people well, especially those I meet for the first time, everywhere I go. In Jesus’ name. Amen!
