“Do not neglect the gift that is in you, which was given to you by prophecy with the laying on of the hands of the eldership.” — I Timothy 4:14 NKJV
A divine gift isn’t given or imparted to be neglected but harnessed until its full potential becomes manifest in the believer’s life.
Each person’s divine gift may be different, although some can be similar. Nevertheless, in all cases, Paul warned Timothy, now us, when he said, “don’t neglect the gift in you.” That implies as potent as the gifts in us can impact nations for the gospel, they can suffer our neglect.
The word “neglect” as used in 1 Timothy 4:14 means “careless.” In other words, not giving attention to the usage and development of every divine gift in a child of God makes it automatically neglected. Therefore, the primary way of preventing the neglect of God’s gift is by giving it attention.
Aside from all these things, Paul uses 2 Timothy 1:6-7 to teach us additional ways of stirring up divine gifts in the believer.
“For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.”
II Timothy 1:7 NKJV
From the Bible verse above (that is just after Paul told Timothy to stir up his divine gift), I see three ways God has provided for us to help us stir up the divine gifts in us through the Holy Spirit.
- By walking in power
- By walking in the love of God
- By walking with a sound mind
All of them are achievable simply by spending time fellowshipping with the Word of God and the Holy Spirit as one continues delivering all duties of one’s ministry in Christ. Friend, don’t neglect the gift in you. Use it for the profit of the kingdom, and God will increase you.
You’re a blessing.
