Don’t Curse Those Who Persecute You

[14] “Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse.” – Romans 12:14 (NKJV)

What comes to mind when you read Romans 12:14? Maybe you remember that employer, classmate, neighbour or fellow that made your life so hard some time ago, or even recently, all because of your faith in Christ. It’s awful. Right? But the Bible says you must bless those who persecute you and not curse them. God knows how easy it is to curse instead of blessing anyone who makes your life miserable. That is why He inspired Paul to emphasise “bless” twice in that same verse.

Proverbs 26:2 says that a curse that is causeless shall not stand. That means that a person who gets cursed for not doing anything wrong shall not experience the effect of that curse upon his life. So, for the Word to say that bless those who persecute you, cursing them will affect their lives because what they made you go through is wrong. The mouth, although small, is a very sharp body organ. It has made and unmade several lives because of words.

As a believer who professes the name of Christ, don’t curse those who persecute you. Use your mouth to say things that are godly and not harmful to others. If Jesus had cursed the Israelites for making Him go through all the pain He bore, none of them would have accessed salvation. Forgiveness is essential. Never take vengeance upon yourself for the wrong things people do to you. Leave room for God’s wrath, and always use your mouth well.

Prayer:

Father, thank You for Your grace and mercy. Help me to utilise my mouth to bless those who persecute me instead of cursing them no matter how angry I may be. In the name of Jesus. Amen!
