In the days of King Solomon, many rulers were filthy rich in vast resources. Talk about gold, cattle, servants, minerals, you name them. They had many. Because of that, they used to brag about their possessions a lot because that was their pride. It didn’t end in the Old Testament as King Herod, king of Israel during the early years of Jesus’ ministry, promised his daughter that he would give her anything she wanted, up to half of his kingdom (this was when John the Baptist was arrested – see Mark 6:23). Think about the pride kings had.
Despite all these, King Solomon said in Proverbs 20:25 that it is a trap to dedicate something rashly and only later to consider your vows. In other words, it is risky to make rash promises, especially when you are in a joyous mood. But why? Because at that moment, people hardly think about the cost and effect of the things they promise to give others. Yes, that’s the truth.
King Herod would have prevented John the Baptist from being beheaded if he had been careful about his promises to his daughter. But that was not the case. As a leader, father, employer or any position of authority you hold, do not rush to make promises. You may not be able to fulfil many of the things you say. Let me say that you are not God, who never fails. Issues can happen and make you feel trapped by your words. So, check your tongue before it lands you in trouble.

Father, thank You for giving me a sound mind today. Help me not to be rash in making promises, lest I disappoint your precious people. In Jesus’ name. Amen!
