[22] “Wives, submit yourselves to your own husbands as you do to the Lord.” – Ephesians 5:22 (NIV)
In my late teens, I usually heard people saying on social media that women were supposed to submit to men. Well, at that age, I didn’t understand why they said that, but it painted a lot of bad images about women in many men’s lives, thinking they were inferior human beings. But that is not true. There is nowhere in scripture that says women should submit to men.
The Bible says that believers in Christ are to submit to one another (see Ephesians 5:21). Why? Because according to Galatians 3:28, there is neither male nor female in Christ. However, in one verse after Ephesians 5:21, Paul started breaking down the submission ladder in terms of marriage. He says that as a wife, you must submit to your own husband. Then, in Ephesians 5:25, he says the husband must love his wife.
So, here is the truth. Submit to one another as believers. But in your home, dear wife, submit to your own husband, not just any man or another person’s husband. Your husband has authority over your life, not any man. Just as you submit to God, submit to your husband in order to enjoy a peaceful marital home.
You are a blessing.
Prayer (for wives):
Father, help me submit to my husband as I also submit to You daily. Teach him to also submit to You so he can lead me well in order for us to have a Christ-exalting marriage. In the name of Jesus. Amen!
