Civil Authorities Are God’s Servants

[5] “Therefore, it is necessary to submit to the authorities, not only because of possible punishment but also as a matter of conscience. [6] This is also why you pay taxes, for the authorities are God’s servants, who give their full time to governing.” – Romans 13:5-6 (NIV)

Several years ago, there were many believers who thought they could do whatever they liked in the name of church and not get punished. But they were indeed punished by governing authorities. Why did they miss it? It is one thing to face genuine persecution against the spread of the gospel and yet another to intentionally breach rules in the name of God. For instance, it is unwise to hold services using sound systems while knowing very well that due to cultural festival celebrations, the chief or governing body in your local assembly has banned noisemaking.

The Bible entreats us to submit to governing authorities, not only because of avoiding possible punishment but also as a matter of conscience. Are you a Christian? If yes, be law-abiding. Don’t skip obeying traffic lights, making noise at places you are not supposed to, or even manoeuvre to evade taxes. Don’t do all those things and hide under God’s name. It doesn’t befit you.

The Bible says civil authorities are God’s servants who give their full time to governing. Think about this! They don’t preach the gospel, but the work they do is still regarded as ministerial work. So, if that is so, what makes you think you don’t need to obey them? As much as you obey your pastor, obey the governing authorities also. It’s for your own good.

You are a blessing.

Prayer:

Father, thank You for giving me civil authorities in my nation. Although they may not do everything right, help me to honour them well. In the name of Jesus. Amen!
