“[18] It is fine to be zealous, provided the purpose is good, and to be so always, not just when I am with you.” — Galatians 4:18 NIV
Zeal is one powerful thing any man can have. Yet, when not used correctly, it can end people in devastating realms of life.
For example, a person can develop a zeal for smoking if he associates with people who do that. Instead of channelling his energies to serving God’s purposes, he ends up a smoker, eventually dying prematurely.
Meanwhile, another person can develop a zeal to know God more. And because of that, he dedicated at least an hour each day to study the Bible. Imagine a genius he’d be in ministry a few years to come.
Paul says in Galatians 4:18 that zeal isn’t a problem. In fact, it’s fine to be zealous. But under one condition. That is, provided the purpose is good. So, as a believer, you must learn how to channel your zeal in life to the Lord, not the world.
If you’re skilled in a specific work area, work diligently with all your heart. But don’t give your best to the world at the expense of the Church. That would be unprofitable to you. Besides, it’ll be a sign that your treasure is in the world, not in Christ. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also (see Matthew 6:21).
As much as the world needs your gift, decide within your heart to do everything for God’s glory, not for man’s remuneration. Nobody can reward you as much as God does. That work may be for someone. But Jesus is still the Lord of your life. Make Him the Lord of your work, and watch Him do exploits through you to impact many through it.
You’re a blessing.
Prayer:
Father, help me channel my zeal to serving You wherever I find myself. That is my prayer today. In the name of Jesus. Amen!
