Become Like Your Master

“A disciple is not above his teacher, but everyone who is perfectly trained will be like his teacher.” — Luke 6:40 NKJV

In every occupation, job or place where there’s leadership, there are followers and leaders. Sometimes, some people follow the leader well. Other times, people don’t. But there’s one principle Jesus stated that has stood for generations.

Jesus says that a disciple is not above his teacher. The word “teacher” in the context of Luke 6:40 is synonymous with “master.” So children aren’t above their teachers. Church members aren’t above their pastors in terms of godly authority. However, Jesus added one thing to emulate if any follower would like to be like their leader. That is, to subject oneself to training.

Jesus says that everyone who’s perfectly trained will be like their teacher. So there are two things to note here.

  1. Leadership is about multiplying leaders through training, not maintaining people as followers.
  2. Training people as a leader will make them understand the vision behind your work.

These two truths go beyond Christendom. But I’ll limit what I’d say today to God and His children. Why? Because God predestined us to become conformed to the image of Jesus (Romans 8:26). So in order to be Christ-like in all your ways, you’ve got to humble yourself before God to be trained. That includes spending time fellowshipping with the Holy Spirit. That also includes submitting to spiritual mentorship in Christ and being consistently present in the gathering of the saints.

Apart from having earthly masters, you also have a heavenly Master—God. Become like your Master by being submissive to Him. He’ll never lead you astray.

You’re a blessing.

Prayer

Father, I pray that You’ll clear every ounce of arrogance in me not to be subject to You. Help me to choose to obey you with intentionality every time, even in the midst of so much confusion in my life. Amen!
